The Need for Dental Education
One way to improve the dental health of children is by improving the education of those who provide their care. Unfortunately, many of those most needing the education cannot afford to travel from their countries to obtain continuing education.
In 2001 the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) recognized the need for educational outreach programs for less wealthy nations. Consequently, the project Dentists for All Children (DENFAC) was designed to assist university teachers in those countries. This has been a successful teach-the-teachers project. Workshops have been held in Romania, Poland, Turkey, Peru, Senegal and China. However, without notable contributions, these workshops would not have taken place. IAPD members volunteered their services and sponsors contributions covered the cost of the workshops. IAPD is grateful to the following sponsors of DENFAC: Colgate Palmolive, 3M ESPE, Oral B, and GC Corporation. These companies partnered with us to improve dental education to help the children we serve.
In 2007 IAPD recognized the need to do more. It was noted that increased education was needed for practicing dentists who provide care for children in less wealthy nations. As a result, another outreach program was created- IAPD Regional Meetings. Similar to the DENFAC project, IAPD members will volunteer their services and sponsorships will be required for other expenses. Hence, we now have two educational outreach programs and again we need financial help.

Why is the IAPD Education Fund Needed?
IAPD cannot provide education programs without funding assistance. Contributions to the Education Fund are critical for these projects to move forward. The IAPD Education Fund has been formed to govern the funds for the DENFAC workshops and the IAPD Regional Meetings, All contributions to the fund will be used solely to assist dental education for children separated from any other IAPD operating funds.
The Sponsor Role & Benefits
- Sponsorship is a prerequisite for these programs.
- Sponsors contribute to the IAPD Education Fund which in turn covers speakers transportation and accommodation expenses.
- The IAPD will invoice sponsors directly.
- Sponsors will be recognized in the IAPD Journal, at IAPD Congresses, on the IAPD website and at Education meetings and workshops when they take place.
- Sponsors have the opportunity to participate in meetings.
Why & How... Does IAPD Organise DENFAC Workshops & Regional Meetings?
- Dentists from many countries have difficulty traveling and taking part in IAPD Congresses.
- To assist these dentists and dental schools, locally provided programs can be effective and efficient.
- IAPD DENFAC workshops for university faculty and Regional Meetings for practitioners are arranged on request from a host nation.
- IAPD Regional Meetings envisioned to be 2-3 day. They may be organized in connection with a national or regional conference, or they may be independent of other local events.
- IAPD brings to educational programs renowned, experienced speakers after consultation with the IAPD Education Committee and the host nation.
